Virtiligo

Vitiligo is a long-term skin condition characterized by the loss of pigmentation, resulting in white patches on the skin. It occurs when melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) are destroyed or stop functioning.

Cause

  • Autoimmune Reaction: The immune system attacks melanocytes.
  • Genetic Factors: Family history increases susceptibility.
  • Environmental Triggers: Sunburn, stress, or chemical exposure.

Ways of Diagnosis

  • Physical Examination: Observing white patches, especially in sun-exposed areas.
  • Wood’s Lamp Test: Highlights depigmented areas.
  • Blood Tests: Rules out associated autoimmune disorders like thyroid dysfunction.

Different Types of Treatments Available:

Topical Steroids or Calcineurin Inhibitors: Stimulates repigmentation.
Phototherapy (PUVA or UVB): Encourages melanin production.
Surgical Options: Skin grafts or melanocyte transplants.

Side Effects:

Topicals: Skin thinning or irritation.
Phototherapy: Risk of burns or long-term skin damage.
