Description

Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)

Eczema is a chronic skin condition characterized by dry, inflamed, and itchy patches of skin. The condition is common in children but can occur at any age. Flare-ups may be triggered by allergens, weather changes, or irritants like soaps and detergents. Severe eczema can lead to skin cracking, bleeding, or infections.

Cause

  • Genetic Factors: A family history of eczema, hay fever, or asthma increases the risk.
  • Skin Barrier Defect: In eczema, the skin barrier is compromised, allowing irritants and allergens to penetrate.
  • Environmental Triggers: Weather changes, especially cold or dry air, can exacerbate symptoms.
  • Allergens and Irritants: Dust mites, pet dander, harsh soaps, and certain fabrics like wool.
  • Emotional Stress: Stress can worsen eczema flare-ups in some individuals.

Ways of Diagnosis

  • Physical Examination: A dermatologist evaluates the pattern, location, and severity of skin lesions.
  • Patch Testing: Identifying potential contact allergens causing eczema-like symptoms.
  • Biopsy (Rare Cases): A skin sample may be taken to rule out other conditions like psoriasis.

Different Types of Treatments Available:

Moisturizers: Regular use of emollients to restore the skin barrier.
Topical Corticosteroids: Used during flare-ups to reduce inflammation.
Non-Steroidal Creams: Calcineurin inhibitors (e.g., tacrolimus) for long-term management.
Phototherapy: Controlled exposure to ultraviolet light to reduce inflammation.
Oral Medications: For severe cases, immunosuppressants like cyclosporine may be prescribed.

Side Effects:

Moisturizers: Rarely, certain emollients may cause mild stinging or irritation.
Steroid Creams: Prolonged use can lead to skin thinning or discoloration.
Phototherapy: Possible sunburn or premature aging of the skin.
Oral Medications: May suppress immunity, increasing susceptibility to infections.

Symptoms When to Visit a Doctor:

Persistent itching or inflammation that disrupts sleep or daily activities.
Cracked, oozing skin or signs of infection (e.g., redness, warmth, pus).
Difficulty managing symptoms with over-the-counter products.
Rapid spread of the condition to other body parts.
